Removing excess gum tissue can make such a difference in the smile. The teeth appear longer and more visible. The patient did not like her gummy smile and loves her new smile.

Dr. Chmura is one of the first orthodontists to embrace the use of a Soft Tissue Laser in an Orthodontic office and he writes and lectures nationally to other orthodontists on this subject. As of 2006, Dr. Chmura is certified by the Academy of Laser Dentistry in three laser wavelengths (CO2, 810nm and 980nm) and by the World Clinical Laser Institute for the Er:YAG laser. Dr. Chmura is one of only a handful of orthodontists certified by the Academy of Laser Dentstry and is one of only 31 dentists within 100 miles of Marshall to have completed this training.

Hyperplasia

Gum tissue can swell dramatically if a patient is not brushing properly, making teeth almost impossible to keep clean. Instead of sending our patients to a periodontist to have the excess gum tissue removed, we can do it in office, saving the patient money and an extra visit to another office.

Waiting for a tooth to come in can sometimes take months. We removed the excess gum tissue above the cuspid with the soft tissue laser and placed a bracket at the same appointment. Two weeks later the cuspid had fully erupted into the arch. This appointment saved the patient months in braces. The procedure was completely painless with no bleeding at all.

Many times a tooth is stuck in the arch and can not come down on its own. In many cases, a periodontist or an oral surgeon must open the tissue and place a bracket for us to pull the tooth out. Sometimes, we are able to use the soft tissue laser to open an area to pull the tooth into the arch. Our procedure uses a topical gel, not an injection, and it is pain free. We can immediately start pulling the tooth in instead of waiting the normal 7-10 days needed with an exposure from the oral surgeon or periodontist.
